KOAN is the seed that blossomed into the koanesce concept. In 2021, I was familiar with Leonard Cohen and his popular songs. However, an 80-block walk in the Manhattan rain, accompanied solely by his music, led me to discover his last three albums. I was profoundly moved by the power and poetry of his lyrics, finding each song to contain what felt like the best lyrics I'd ever heard.

Covering "You Want It Darker" became the catalyst for KOAN. The goal was not just to honor the lyrics, but to remain true to Cohen's voice while exploring an entirely different genre. KOAN is more than a tribute; it's a desire to continue the exploration of the profound themes and ideas that Cohen so eloquently expressed.

KOAN evolved into koanesce when I realized that the concepts and insights Cohen shared didn't have to end with him. The play on words with "koan" became a mission statement. Through this project, I aim to create music that resonates, sharing my own unique perspective and musical journey.

This project is also a testament to the power of collaboration. Koanesce is not a band. I'm incredibly fortunate to work with many talented musicians who embrace their own perspectives and authenticity.

KOAN, the Leonard Cohen project that started this new chapter, will continue and grow. Sharing such powerful lyrics across various genres has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.
